Vitamin D or calciferol is the common name for the group of biologically active substances – fat soluble D vitamins (D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5). Of these, Vitamin D2 and D3 are the two most common forms of Vitamin D.
Vitamin D2 can be obtained from plant sources, but it has no great nutritional benefit due to the inability of the intestine to absorb a notable amount of this form. Whereas, vitamin D3 can be obtained through animal sources but the majority is produced in the body through the modification of 7-dehydrocholesterol to pre-vitamin D3 by UV-B radiation.
The ecological conditions in which modern people live may not provide adequate exposure to sunlight. Air pollution and contamination become an additional barrier to obtaining vitamin D3.
